Shadowface Poem Project

Objective:
To demonstrate an understanding of an event, time or culture by creating a shadow face poster and then writing a minimum 10 line poem that demonstrates knowledge of the event, time or culture.

Creating the Project:

1. Using black construction paper, cut out various circles, squiggles, curves and other random shapes. One should NOT try to cut out face parts on purpose.
2.
Arrange the shapes on a white piece of construction paper until a "shadow face" appears. This face will look like someone from the event, time or culture being studied. It could be a man, women or child. Try different combinations until a face just seems to appear.
3.
Write a "My Life" poem to go with your shadow face. This poem may or may not rhyme. It must be at least 10 lines long and must contain information about what is being studied. Do NOT use pencil. Type the poem if possible. There should be no spelling or grammatical errors.
The poem should be from the point of view of the face. It probably will not rhyme, but could. It should share emotions, thoughts, dreams, etc. of the face. This poem is serious and emotional and should reflect the thoughts of the shadow face.
4.
Place your name and period on BOTH the poem and the shadow face
5.
Staple the poem to the shadow face.

Sample:

Digging in the earth
I dig a pit for the emperor's silent army
Terra cotta soldiers, eyes watching me
They will guard the tomb of Shi Huangdi
I suffer all day as a legalist society controls all actions
My brother died at the Great Wall
I, too, will meet death soon
I fight to hold back tears, my gods have left me
The emperor crushes us like ants beneath his sandels
I miss my family, my wife, my children
Their memories keep me alive, for now
I will never see them again
I suffer and cry until the day I will meet my ancestors.
